How to Measure Your Dog’s Neck for a Collar
You’ll Need:
A flexible measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler)
A treat (to help your dog stay calm and still)
A notepad or phone to record the measurement
Step 1: Get Your Dog Relaxed
Have your dog stand or sit comfortably. Give them a treat or two so they stay calm during the process.
Step 2: Locate the Correct Spot
Find the base of your dog’s neck, where their collar normally sits — typically just below the jaw and above the shoulders.
Step 3: Wrap the Measuring Tape
Wrap the measuring tape around your dog’s neck at that spot.
The tape should be snug but not tight.
You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the tape and your dog’s neck.
(This is called the “two-finger rule.”)
If you’re using string, mark where it meets, then measure that length with a ruler.
Step 4: Record the Measurement
Write down the neck size in inches or centimetres.
For example, “Neck: 15 inches.”
Step 5: Add Comfort Allowance (if needed)
If your dog has a lot of fur, loose skin, or is still growing, add 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) to the measurement for comfort and adjustability.
